Join Jan Brett as she shares this funny Ukranian tail of a little boy named Nicki who has lost his mitten. In the story The Mitten, One by one, woodland animals find it and crawl in; first, a curious mole, then a rabbit, a badger and others, each one larger than the last. Finally, a big brown bear is followed in by a tiny brown mouse and what happens next makes for a wonderfully funny climax.
Like all of Jan Brett’s books the outer pictures around the story tell their own tale with beautiful illustrations. You won’t want to miss sharing this story with your children this wintry season.

The Mitten
Start this Unit off with working through the story map. Review the characters of the story, the setting and the problem and solution. Don’t forget to check out the pictures around the pages!
I always love working on comprehension with my children by using story sequence pictures. This is a fun one because they will retell the story by moving the pictures through the mitten. Start with Grandmother Baba and have your student share each animal character through the story until the end.
Each animal character had their own way of moving through the story. Introduce the noun/verbs by practicing matching the animal with how it moved through the story.
Encourage your student to practice spelling and identifying the words from the story by finding them in this word search.
Finish up the fun with playing a math game where they will practice their adding and subtracting skills. Grab one die and the game board. Roll the die to determine how far you get to move. Use that same number on the die to add or subtract with the number they landed on on the board. The first person to reach Nicki’s home is the winner.
