A Plus Adaptive Math Curriculum {Review}

I’m not going to lie. It’s been a rough year at our little homeschool academy. My oldest hates math and struggles through every lesson. I am no fan myself so it’s a big oh’ barrel of fun when it comes time to sit down and work on it. I was given the opportunity to review the Adaptive Math Curriculum from A+ Interactive Math (by A+ TutorSoft Inc.) And I jumped at the opportunity, simply with the hope to save my sanity, and maybe my relationship with my daughter.

The purpose of the Adaptive Math Curriculum is to identify and address learning gaps in math skills.  This is by far my biggest issue with teaching math to my oldest. For years we worked through the same math curriculum but I finally waved the white flag when I realized that for her, it wasn’t working. We switched to another program and still the same. We finally got a tutor, but by that time she was so far behind we were struggling to make up time. We are currently at the point where we are trying to figure out where she struggles the most and target those areas. This is what excited me most about the Adaptive Math Curriculum, it does exactly this.

How it works:

  1. Student takes a “mini test” for each major concept to identify current skill level.
  2. Program then creates an “individualized” lesson plan which includes everything you need.
  3. Student follows an “individualized” lesson plan and you see various reports that measure progress as student masters various skills and closes learning gaps.

What does it look like?

Once you have set up an account for your student this is the screen they will see when they login each time.  The first step is to take the tests that they have available. You have the flexibility to take all the tests for their level and then work through the lessons, or take them one by one. You know your child best and what would be less frustrating for them.

Once you have determined the lessons that need to be worked on you can move through the lessons and worksheets for that concept.

The worksheets are great because they are all online and give extra practice. You can see at a glance what your student missed and what they are still struggling with.. We have yet to do any of the worksheets because working through the lessons have been enough for us, but once we have made it through everything I will probably use them to help reinforce what she learned.

You can keep up with your students progress at a glance through the “View my reports” button.

If you have a student in grades 1st-6th grade including pre-algebra, that needs some extra help this is a great program that will give you the support you need to help them get caught up.

What we really think.

I appreciated a lot of aspects of the program, I like being able to look directly at the progress reports and see where she is having trouble.  The videos themselves were thorough but not too exciting (not that they needed to be). And there are a lot of them. The people at A+ Interactive Math, made sure no concept was missed! This was a little discouraging for my daughter because the lesson appeared to go on forever. Getting to the lessons was a little cumbersome  there were a few steps to click through before you got to the actual teaching part. But I didn’t find this to be a deal breaker.

Zoe didn’t enjoy logging in to do her lessons, but since math isn’t her “thing” she wouldn’t love logging into any program. I have seen progress in several of the concepts she has worked through so I feel that with continued use, we will eventually get to our goal of being on “grade level”

If you are not needing the adaptive math curriculum and are just looking for a regular math curriculum for your family, A+ Interactive Math (by A+ TutorSoft Inc.) offers a family math package for all grade levels 1st-6th, pre-algebra and algebra. You can find out what other reviewers had to say about using the regular program by clicking on the link below.
