Okay, I’m just going to throw it out there… Christmas is only 8 months away! I know… I know… But I’m prepping you now, because this is quite possibly the perfect Christmas gift for your pre-teen, teen kiddo. My children have always loved to record videos and create their own lego movies but the Stop Motion Animation kit from Stopmotion Explosion has taken their skills to a whole new level.
When shopping for gifts for my children I typically do everything possible to stay away from technology. I feel like they have their Ipads, controllers and computers in their hands too often as it is. But this has been the perfect balance of use of technology and their own creativity.
The Stop Motion Animation Kit includes:
- Includes 1080p HD video camera with internal microphone. Full control of exposure, color, and white balance, 360º rotating head, manual focus, Full HD 1920 x 1080 image resolution, flex base, internal microphone and many other features.
- Camera cord length is 4-1/2 feet. Compatible with Skype, and other video chatting applications. USB 2.0 input.
- Second edition 290+ page Stopmotion Explosion book. Take a look at
the table of contents, and read the first chapter.
- Animation software. No CD-ROM drive required, install via CD or download from their site.
- Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8, 10 & OS X 7.5+ compatible.
- Stopmotion Explosion Animatior – iOS app
The kit includes everything you would need to make a professional looking video.
What we loved:
It’s the toy that keeps on giving. My son got so into creating the movies that he began to research on his own how to create movies with different mediums. He was reading the book and watching videos from creators of movies that use stop motion or claymation, he was practicing different techniques and problem solving when things didn’t work out the way he had hoped. He was even watching stop motion and clay animation movie clips to get ideas for his characters.
I especially loved his ingenuity when it came to create music with it. Once he realized that the music he wanted to use was going to cost him to download he found a way to work around it by slicing different songs together to get the same effect.
While all our children enjoyed creating the videos, he was the one that really latched on to the kit and took off with it. I had so much pleasure in watching him get excited about the stories he was creating and I loved that he was spent so much time time researching the way professionals in the movie business created videos so that he could make better videos.
Y’all, I’m not kidding when I say he really “dug” this.
My favorite part was that there wasn’t a lot of set up. Once he had the program on his computer, all he had to do was plug in the the camera and go. This meant that clean up was easy too!
Here are a few of the videos they created:

Us receiving this coincided with our co-op’s 4H club unit on Stopmotion as well. When I heard this, I offered up use of the camera and boy did they have fun stepping up their game from just the apps that they had been using on their Ipads.
Other reviewer’s children had just as much fun as we did, check out their creativity and what they thought by clicking the picture below here.
